Acai Berry, the Benefits and the Scams

There were huge controversies about this fruit on media either on TV, radio, magazines, newspapers or even on internet. Some groups promote them heavily, while the other groups oppose them. Acai berry is so popular almost everywhere and even discussed in a popular program like Oprah.

However if we try to filtered those information and make little effort to study what have been going on to the fruit then we can come to conclusion that the fruit is actually have benefit for human being but it has been over exploited for such a numbers of medical applications which are not biologically corrected for the purpose of making huge amount of money. Acai berry also being exploited in ingredients where only small percentage of acai berry inside the end products that we consume or only low quality of acai berry has been introduced inside the product.

I have never study the history how it started but assuming probably some people or group of people who are controlling the market of the fruit at particular time exploited the media heavily to sell all their products very fast. Perhaps when it became so popular in the market or immediately boom in the market, then acai berry created more producers who come with variety quality of fruits. Then the market cannot judge which one is better and which one is not.  In addition, some end products also use small percentage of acai berry extract in their products to sell it at low prices in order to get more customers in the higher demanding market.

We can say that the way they produced is not professionally produced or not honestly produced.

What is “free radical”?

Basically, free radicals are toxins, chemicals and pollutants we are all exposed to on a daily basis that can damage our healthy cells throughout our bodies.  They can also be considered a source that ages the body from the inside out but there is something you can do about it.  Make sure you give your body plenty of foods that are high in antioxidants.

What is “antioxidant”?

On the other hand, antioxidants can slow down the aging process and oxidation. Antioxidants can prevent the damage that can be done by free radicals by giving an electron to a free radical in the body making it a stable molecule instead of one that is out of control.

Acai berry’s nutrition

Acai berry contains many polyphenolic anthocyanin compounds like resveratrol, cyanidin-3-galactoside, ferulic acid, delphinidin, petunidin as well as astringent pro-anthocyanidin tannins like epicatechin, protocatechuic acid and ellagic acid.

Scientific studies suggests that these contents are claimed to act as anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer functions (because of anti-free radical fighting). In addition tannins are known to have anti-infective, anti-inflammatory and anti-hemorrhagic properties.

Preliminary research studies suggest that ellagic acid in acai has anti-proliferative properties due to its ability of directly inhibiting the DNA binding of certain carcinogens, including nitrosamines toxins in the food.

Acai berry is also rich in medium chain fatty acids like oleic acid (omega-9) and linoleic acid (omega-6). These compounds help reduce LDL-cholesterol level and rise good HDL-cholesterol levels in the body as well as help prevent heart disease. Further, they help prevent skin dryness by maintaining adequate moisture in the skin

Acai pulp has good levels of dietary fiber. Good fiber in the diet helps remove cholesterol in the stools.

Acai berries contain good amount of minerals like potassium, manganese, copper, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase.

They are rich in B-complex vitamins and vitamin-K. Contain very good amounts of niacin, vitamin B-6 and riboflavin. These vitamins are function as co-factors and help body in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Why it should be a controversy?

Referring to the nutrition above, we know that actually acai berries do provide benefits that producers are claiming on their products. However the way they are promoting their products are so “extravaganza” that it seems in this world no other fruits or herbs could challenge acai berry in their nutrition which is not correct at all. The best way is to combine few fruits or herbs together where we can get more benefits from other fruits as well.

Acai berry vs. other fruits

Does acai berry have the highest anti-oxidant levels more than some commonly used fruits like pomegranate, blueberries… etc? Let’s go check it one by one
